Senegal’s political shift sparks mixed reactions among Sonko supporters

The dismissal of Senegal’s Prime Minister has reignited political discussions in Dakar. Just hours after the presidential decree ending Ousmane Sonko’s tenure, residents of the capital find themselves torn between resignation and disillusionment following months of escalating tensions between the country’s two top leaders.

Contrasting sentiments in Dakar

Ibrahima Dione, a longtime supporter of Sonko from Dakar, voiced his firm stance. « Thankfully, this was expected. Ousmane Sonko has achieved more than any other minister in Senegal’s history. We stand even prouder beside him. Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s behavior has been reckless, » he declared.

The sudden removal of the entire government, including Sonko, left the Patriotic Africans of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity — PASTEF — with little immediate response beyond a brief social media statement, revealing the deepening rift at the heart of the state.

Modou Diaw, another Dakar resident, expressed concern over the move. « This dismissal is destabilizing. The announcement came as a surprise. It’s not a positive development for the country. Senegal needs jobs, not political turmoil, » he shared.

The political landscape shifted dramatically when Bassirou Diomaye Faye assumed the presidency, largely thanks to Sonko’s widespread appeal among Senegal’s youth. However, the Prime Minister’s numerous controversial statements reportedly frustrated the head of state, according to political observers.

Thierno Sow, a Dakar local, took a more neutral stance. « Many Senegalese anticipated this outcome. It’s the president’s prerogative to appoint and dismiss. If it’s for the nation’s good, then it’s justified, » he reasoned.

The PASTEF party secured a landslide victory in the first round of the March 2024 elections, campaigning on promises of sweeping political reforms and combating public mismanagement.
