Senegal prime minister ousmane sonko dismissed amid political tensions

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko removed from office in Senegal

The political landscape in Senegal remains volatile following the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The decision was announced by the President of the Republic, who relieved Sonko of his duties just hours after a heated exchange with lawmakers.

Escalating tensions at the heart of the crisis

In a fiery parliamentary session, Ousmane Sonko strongly criticized the existence of political funds. However, the recent weeks have witnessed a sharp escalation in tensions at the highest levels of government. Less than a month ago, in an interview with three television channels, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had sought to calm rumors of an institutional crisis. “He is my Prime Minister. As long as he holds this position, it is because he enjoys my full confidence. The moment that changes, I will replace him,” the Head of State had stated, projecting an image of composure.

The very next day, Ousmane Sonko responded indirectly. Addressing his supporters and party members, the leader of the Pastef movement urged them to strengthen their commitment, reiterating that the ideology of his party transcends personal ambitions. He emphasized that the Pastef project is rooted in sacrifice, selflessness, and dedication to national service.

Two days later, the President took another step by appointing Me Abdoulaye Tine as spokesperson for the Presidency. Tine, who also chairs the coalition “Diomaye Président,” replaced Ousseynou Ly, a figure seen as close to Ousmane Sonko. Following his dismissal, Ousseynou Ly publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the Pastef leader.

“My commitment and loyalty to the transformation project led by Pastef, under the guidance of President Ousmane Sonko, remain unwavering. This project, which embodies the hope and ambition for a sovereign, just, and prosperous Senegal, continues to guide our actions,” he declared.

Disagreements over the coalition’s future

The rift between the two leaders centers on the future of the “Diomaye Président” coalition. While Ousmane Sonko advocates for its dissolution, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye insists on preserving the alliance, which played a pivotal role in securing the 2024 presidential victory.

Economic challenges amid political instability

These tensions unfold against a backdrop of economic strain. Senegal is grappling with a slowdown in economic activity, while public debt has surged to nearly 132% of GDP. The country’s sovereign rating has been downgraded multiple times, reflecting tighter access to international markets and the pending negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a new partnership.

This sequence marks the gradual dissolution of a political partnership forged over a decade ago. Barred from running in the 2024 presidential election, Ousmane Sonko had designated Bassirou Diomaye Faye to represent the Pastef. Faye went on to secure a decisive first-round victory with over 54% of the vote, defeating Amadou Ba, the former Prime Minister under Macky Sall.
