Senegal politics: Oumar Sarr questions Diomaye and Sonko’s leadership strategy

Oumar Sarr, former minister and key figure in the Front pour la défense de la démocratie et de la République (FDR), has raised concerns about the apparent tensions between Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Speaking during an appearance on a national radio program, the mayor of Dagana suggested that what the public perceives as disagreements may be a deliberate political strategy rather than genuine discord within the executive branch.

Public skepticism grows over Senegal’s leadership

In his remarks, Oumar Sarr highlighted the confusion surrounding the governance style of President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko. While some observers believe there are fundamental policy disagreements, Sarr argued that the visible exchanges may be carefully orchestrated to shape public perception. “At times, it feels like there are real disagreements, but at other times, it seems as though they are simply disregarding public opinion,” he stated.

The former PDS official pointed out that the lack of official statements confirming tensions only fuels speculation. “People are divided—some see genuine opposition, while others suspect a political performance,” he added, emphasizing how such ambiguity complicates the national discourse.
