Senegal Morocco football controversy: caf decision sparks outrage
The highly anticipated African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025 final has become a flashpoint for intense debate. The controversy erupted after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Jury controversially awarded a 3-0 forfeit victory to Morocco on March 17, despite Senegal’s 1-0 win on the field. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) swiftly escalated the matter by filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS).
In a separate but equally contentious development, 18 Senegalese supporters are facing legal consequences following violent incidents during the final on January 18. Initially handed sentences ranging from three months to one year in prison on February 19, their case was reheard in Rabat on Monday. The appeals hearing shed further light on the complexities of the case, with the court grappling with conflicting testimonies and procedural disputes.
During the hearing, it was revealed that three-month sentences for some supporters may lead to their release as early as this coming Saturday. However, the prosecution has pushed for stricter penalties, seeking up to two years of imprisonment, according to reports by RMC. The accused face charges including violence against law enforcement, pitch invasion, and throwing objects.
defense claims procedural flaws in supporter trials
The defense team presented a starkly different narrative, arguing that the supporters were not acting out of defiance but rather due to uncontrollable crowd movements. One supporter’s lawyer, Patrick Kabou, told AFP that «errors occurred, and those responsible are not here but in Senegal». He maintained that the accused were forced onto the pitch to escape «spitting and projectile attacks», rather than to challenge the referee’s decision.
The hearing also exposed a procedural standoff. The defense sought to present video evidence to formally identify the accused, a request that was denied by the prosecution. The prosecution argued that the «entire world witnessed the distressing images live», making formal identification redundant due to flagrant violations.
