Senegal hosts 85th pan-african parliamentary session with sonko at helm

Dakar is set to become the focal point of continental diplomacy as it hosts the 85th Executive Committee Session of the Pan-African Parliament from June 3 to 4, 2026. With delegations from sixteen African nations preparing to converge, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has emphasized the significance of the gathering in advancing the panafrican vision.

In a message addressed to fellow parliamentarians, Sonko highlighted the critical role of strengthened parliamentary cooperation at a time when Africa faces multiple challenges. «At a juncture when our continent must address pressing issues, reinforcing parliamentary ties is not just beneficial—it is essential. The future of Africa will be shaped by Africans themselves, guided by our shared values, aspirations, and interests. I am confident that our deliberations will propel the panafrican ideal forward, a legacy cherished by the generations before us,» he stated.

The high-profile event marks Sonko’s inaugural presidency of a major continental assembly since his overwhelming election to lead Senegal’s National Assembly on May 26, 2026, securing 99.25% of the vote (132 out of 133 ballots). Over one hundred legislators, including deputies and senators from across Africa, will participate in discussions aimed at fostering unity and collective progress.
