Gabonese leader to visit France in july 2026 for strengthened ties

Gabon’s Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has revealed plans for an official visit to France on July 20, 2026. The announcement was made during a national broadcast, setting the stage for what officials describe as a pivotal moment in bilateral relations.

Diplomatic sources indicate this visit will build upon the direct dialogue established between Libreville and Paris since the conclusion of Gabon’s transition period. Key topics on the agenda include economic collaboration, environmental initiatives, Congo Basin forest preservation, educational exchanges, and regional security concerns.

President Oligui Nguema’s upcoming trip marks his second official visit to France since assuming office in August 2023. His first visit took place from May 27 to 31, 2024, culminating in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. During that visit, both leaders reinvigorated cooperation across economic, political, trade, and environmental sectors, with particular emphasis on biodiversity conservation and climate action.

The 2024 visit also featured a major Franco-Gabonese economic forum in Paris, drawing nearly 600 business leaders, along with engagements with the Gabonese diaspora community. As the July 2026 visit approaches, observers anticipate further progress in strengthening these bilateral ties.

Macron’s Gabon visit in late 2025

French President Emmanuel Macron has made two official trips to Gabon since 2017, including a visit from November 23 to 24, 2025. During that visit, Macron was personally received at Léon-Mba International Airport by President Oligui Nguema. The stated purpose was to acknowledge the completion of Gabon’s political transition and support the new leadership in what was described as a renewed partnership built on equality and mutual respect.

During the November 2025 meetings, both nations agreed to advance several key projects, including training for Gabonese security forces, the establishment of a natural resources protection academy, and French assistance in modernizing the Transgabonais railway network.

The upcoming July 2026 visit by President Oligui Nguema signals Gabon’s commitment to maintaining a balanced and productive relationship with France. Following the 2024 Paris visit and the 2025 Libreville meeting, the diplomatic calendar between the two countries is accelerating, reflecting growing mutual engagement.
