Nigerian and beninese leaders strengthen ties in historic first meeting

The Nigerian government rolled out the red carpet for Benin’s freshly elected President Romuald Wadagni on June 1, as he touched down in Lagos for his maiden overseas trip following his inauguration.

President Wadagni was personally greeted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, who welcomed him at the presidential pavilion.

The Beninese Presidency later issued a statement emphasizing that «the solemnity of this reception reflects the high priority Nigeria places on the arrival of new leadership in Benin and the renewal it symbolizes.»

During the brief but intensive visit, President Wadagni held high-level talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. According to the Beninese Presidency, the two leaders engaged in «in-depth discussions on key pillars of bilateral cooperation—security, trade, and regional integration—marked by candor and a shared long-term vision.»

The visit is seen as a pivotal moment in reinforcing the long-standing, deeply intertwined relationship between Benin and Nigeria, which spans decades in economics, culture, and shared strategic interests. Official sources in Cotonou described the trip as an opportunity to «consolidate existing ties and chart a bold new course for the Cotonou-Abuja partnership.»

This diplomatic engagement sends a strong signal about the guiding principles of President Wadagni’s administration: «a forward-looking, proactive foreign policy geared toward enhancing collective sovereignty across West Africa,» as outlined by both the Beninese Presidency and the State Protocol.

With Nigeria standing as West Africa’s largest economy and Benin’s top trading partner, the latter relies heavily on its neighbor for critical imports that sustain its agriculture-driven and service-based economy.
