Sénégal and Morocco clash over can 2025 africa cup title
The drama surrounding the CAN 2025 Africa Cup of Nations championship title continues to unfold, as the Morocco football team was controversially awarded the trophy by the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) two months after the final. Now, the Senegal national team has taken legal action, challenging the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS). Adding fuel to the fire, a key juror from the appeal panel has come forward with explosive revelations about the controversial ruling.
In a candid interview with a leading newspaper, Faustino Varela Monteiro, the vice-president of the appeal commission, openly disagreed with the verdict that stripped the Lions of Teranga of their hard-earned victory. « I fundamentally disagree with the decision », he stated, revealing that he was the only dissenting voice in the panel that endorsed the unfavorable outcome for Senegal.
« I cannot accept the interpretation that led to this conclusion », he continued. « If the referee allowed the match to conclude without intervention, it implies there was no abandonment. Therefore, any disciplinary body ruling otherwise contradicts the spirit of fair play. »
Internal dissent challenges CAF’s decision
« Furthermore, if match outcomes can be retroactively altered, the very concept of a definitive result loses all credibility », he argued, before emphasizing that « the TAS will not reconsider a decision made on the field unless there is clear evidence of arbitrariness or bad faith. »
To recap, on January 18, in Rabat, the Senegal team secured a dramatic 1-0 win in extra time, courtesy of a goal by Pape Gueye. However, the match was briefly halted when Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest against a late penalty awarded to Morocco. The controversial spot-kick was ultimately missed by Brahim Díaz.
