President oligui nguema’s upcoming state visit to Paris signals new era for Gabon-France relations

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is set to undertake a pivotal state visit to Paris in the coming days. This significant diplomatic event was announced by Fabrice Mauriès, France’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Libreville, during the celebration of French National Day on July 14th at the French Embassy. The ambassador characterized the upcoming visit as representing the “highest possible protocol level” and a “decisive stage in strengthening our relationship” between the two nations.

Addressing Gabonese officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the French community, Ambassador Mauriès unequivocally confirmed, “In a few days, His Excellency the President of the Gabonese Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, will travel to Paris for a state visit, the highest protocol level possible, which will mark a decisive step in reinforcing our relationship.”

The ambassador underscored that this burgeoning dynamic is a continuation of dialogues initiated since 2023. He recalled President Oligui Nguema’s official visit to Paris in spring 2024, followed by President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Libreville. “This partnership, whose scope is continually expanding, is in constant redefinition,” Mauriès stated, noting that these high-level meetings are charting a new course for Franco-Gabonese cooperation.

Reaffirming Paris’s stance regarding the Gabonese Transition, Ambassador Mauriès declared, “France was not a party to it, because it is up to the Gabonese people, and them alone, to define Gabon’s fundamental choices.” However, he assured that “France has never withdrawn; it remains and will continue to be a reliable, loyal, committed, and determined partner to assist Gabonese citizens in forging this new collective future.”

The diplomat concluded by announcing that this upcoming state visit will pave the way for a new vision of economic relations between the two countries. “We will build the mutually beneficial, win-win partnership that the President of the Gabonese Republic desires, and which President Macron has confirmed is also our vision,” he indicated, adding that “new projects stemming from this vision will be announced in Paris in a few days.”

Since the change of regime in August 2023, Gabon and France have been engaged in a gradual recalibration of their bilateral relations. The reciprocal visits by Presidents Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Emmanuel Macron have inaugurated a fresh cycle of political, economic, and security cooperation. The Gabonese head of state’s state visit to Paris is anticipated to mark a significant new phase in this rapprochement, with several strategic projects expected to be unveiled to further strengthen the partnership between the two nations.
