Moyes backs West Ham survival as Everton eyes Premier League win over Tottenham
Everton manager David Moyes has made it clear he wants to help former club West Ham United secure their Premier League status, while also prioritising his own team’s push for a top-half finish. With relegation fears looming for both West Ham and Tottenham, Moyes’ side travel to London this weekend with a chance to shape the season’s dramatic conclusion.
London derby with high stakes
Tottenham currently sit 17th, just two points above West Ham in the relegation zone. While Spurs only need a point to secure their safety, their inconsistent form could be exposed by an Everton side fighting for a top-half finish. Meanwhile, West Ham face Leeds United in a must-win clash to keep their hopes of survival alive. A win for Everton would add further pressure on Tottenham, potentially sending them down if West Ham triumph.
Moyes’ emotional connection to West Ham
At 63, Moyes has a deep bond with West Ham, having managed the club twice between November 2017 and June 2024. His second spell culminated in a historic Europa Conference League title, achieved with a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Prague on June 7, 2023. Though his current focus is on Everton—currently mired in a six-match winless streak—his desire to see West Ham survive remains strong.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Moyes admitted: “I’d love to help West Ham stay up if I can. But my job now is to ensure Everton finish in the top half and secure the financial boost that comes with it—something you only appreciate years later.”
A season-defining weekend
Everton arrive at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with little recent success, having won just once in their last 16 Premier League away games against Spurs. For Tottenham, avoiding a repeat of last season’s 4-1 home defeat to Brighton is crucial. As the final whistle approaches, attention will shift to international football, with the next World Cup on the horizon.
