Mali covid-19 vaccination: current status and challenges

The Mali is grappling with a significant shortfall in its Covid-19 vaccination efforts, failing to meet its initial target of immunizing 70% of the population aged 12 and above. As of now, only 8% of this demographic has received the vaccine, prompting urgent intervention from international health bodies.

In response, a United Nations delegation visited Mali in early October to collaborate with local authorities. Their mission? To bolster the nation’s vaccination drive and align it with the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (NDVP), a strategic framework designed to combat the pandemic effectively.

“Multiple campaigns are underway. Our role is to support the government and its partners in reinforcing these initiatives and safeguarding the population against Covid-19,” stated Ted Chaiban, the UN’s Chief Coordinator for Country Preparedness for Covid-19 Vaccination.

The Mali Red Cross has been instrumental in organizing large-scale initiatives in Bamako, combining volunteer training, community outreach, and the distribution of protective equipment. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to curb the spread of the virus, which has seen reduced transmission in West Africa in recent months.

Despite these measures, convincing some Malians—who remain deeply skeptical about vaccines—poses a formidable challenge. This reluctance is particularly pronounced as Covid-19 cases decline, making it harder to emphasize the ongoing need for immunization.
