Mali army regains control in key conflict zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a decisive shift in momentum, asserting full operational control across contested regions targeted by both the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction operating in central and southern Mali.

In a recent statement, military officials confirmed that renewed clashes unfolded on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location situated roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The intensification followed the arrival of additional manpower and equipment dispatched to reinforce the MNLA, according to military assessments.

« The FAMA units demonstrated unwavering resolve during the engagements, » the communiqué emphasized. « Despite heightened pressure, our forces maintained disciplined combat operations throughout the day, upholding the nation’s sovereignty with courage and tactical precision. »

The statement underscored the military’s « absolute confidence in its ability to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity, protect civilians, and dismantle hostile forces operating within our borders. »

Meanwhile, a representative for the MNLA, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif in a post-battle assessment, asserting that the group had successfully reinstated its position following the resumption of hostilities.

Ramadan also refuted rumors regarding the death of the MNLA’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, stating that the commander remained actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
