The LFP disciplinary commission met Wednesday evening to review the controversial match between Bastia and Le Mans, played last Saturday during the 34th round of Ligue 2. With only seconds remaining, referee Ruddy Buquet halted the game and sent players to the locker rooms after smoke bombs and firecrackers were launched from the stands. The match never resumed, but the disciplinary body, after a brief review, upheld the scoreline that sends Le Mans up to Ligue 1 and Bastia down to Ligue 3—the professional division replacing the National next season.
Bastia avoids point deduction despite sanctions
While Bastia escaped a point deduction—a potential threat given their recent disciplinary record—they were handed two immediate stadium closures and one suspended. The club had narrowly avoided sanctions in December after a match against Red Star was abandoned following a smoke bomb landing on the field from the Corsican supporters’ section.
The disciplinary body clarified that point deductions typically apply when match participants are directly affected. Sébastien Deneux, president of the LFP disciplinary commission, stated: «Generally, we withdraw a point when a player or official is struck. This wasn’t the case in the Bastia-Le Mans match, so revoking the suspended sanction wasn’t warranted.»
