Gabon boosts intra-African trade under president Oligui Nguema

President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema of Gabon is pushing for stronger economic ties with African nations. During a cabinet meeting on June 25, he directed the government to prioritize imports from the continent, particularly in the food sector, to reinforce the country’s panafricanist economic strategy.

Intra-African trade has officially become a cornerstone of Gabon’s economic plan. The president’s directive to accelerate commercial exchanges with African partners—especially in food products—reflects a commitment to regional integration and shared prosperity.

This policy shift aligns with Gabon’s broader vision under Oligui Nguema, who has made regional cooperation and South-South partnerships central to his leadership since taking office.

Cabinet receives firm presidential guidance

The cabinet meeting’s closing statement highlighted the president’s emphasis on boosting intra-African imports. « Prioritizing goods from African countries—especially food—helps integrate regional economies and fosters shared economic growth among brother nations, » Oligui Nguema stated.

The directive was framed as a « firm mandate », with expectations for immediate and measurable implementation across government policies.

Alignment with Africa’s free trade zone

Gabon’s push for deeper intra-African trade mirrors its commitments to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The initiative aims to boost commerce between African economies and strengthen regional value chains.

In recent months, Gabonese authorities have intensified efforts to integrate the country into the continental market, including renewed talks with the AfCFTA secretariat and campaigns to promote local processing of natural resources. For the president, economic sovereignty means reducing reliance on external markets while deepening partnerships with African neighbors.

Measurable outcomes expected soon

By focusing on food imports, the president is urging trade and supply agencies to adjust policies to increase the share of African goods in Gabon’s market. This could lead to stronger regional trade deals, smoother cross-border imports, and better integration of Gabonese businesses into continental value chains.

With intra-African trade now a top government priority, Oligui Nguema is shifting from policy to action. His goal? A Gabon where economic cooperation drives growth, sovereignty, and shared progress across the continent.
