Fraudulent practices in student visa applications have become a critical issue for French authorities in Cameroon. Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Cultural and Cooperation Advisor at the French Embassy in Yaoundé, highlights the widespread nature of these irregularities.

« The scale of deception is alarming, » she states. « We’ve encountered falsified documents, incorrect financial statements, mismatched identification papers, and misleading proof of funds—cases where applicants claim to have blocked funds that don’t exist. »

Stricter scrutiny introduced for student visa applicants

In response, French consular services have significantly intensified their verification processes. Piquet-Viaux emphasizes that every document is now meticulously examined to prevent fraudulent applications.

These measures directly impact Cameroonian students seeking visas for private institutions in France. Applicants must now provide either full tuition payment receipts or equivalent proof of financial capacity before a visa is issued. This policy aims to curb the misuse of student visa procedures.

For students who had already paid partial tuition fees in France, the outcome varies. « This depends entirely on the institution where the funds were deposited, » explains Piquet-Viaux. « The new requirement involves blocking a sum of money in a dedicated account. Once the visa is granted and the student’s admission is confirmed, the funds are released. »

Cameroon is currently the only African nation subjected to these enhanced visa regulations for student mobility to France. The decision has sparked widespread criticism among affected families.
