Fifa introduces strict disciplinary measures following Sénégal vs Maroc CAN 2025 controversy

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, football’s governing body is strengthening its legal framework to prevent radical protests on the pitch.
This initiative follows the turbulent events that marked the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). On January 18 in Rabat, the decision by the Sénégal squad to walk off the field during the game led to scenes of absolute disorder, sparking intense debate throughout the sporting community.
In light of these events, FIFA has pushed through new amendments via the International Football Association Board (IFAB). These updated regulations will be strictly enforced during the 2026 World Cup, which is set to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
New sanctions for on-field protests
One of the most significant updates involves players who leave the pitch of their own accord to protest a refereeing decision. Such actions will now result in an immediate expulsion. These penalties also extend to technical staff members who encourage or incite such behavior.
According to the official statement, the referee has the authority to send off any player exiting the field in protest, at the organizer’s discretion. This directive is equally applicable to any team official who promotes this attitude.
Forfeits and match integrity
Another major shift in the rules concerns match interruptions. Any team found responsible for the definitive stoppage of a match will be sanctioned with a loss by forfeit. This measure is designed to eliminate the deliberate suspension of international fixtures.
The controversy during the CAN 2025 final peaked when the Sénégal head coach, Pape Thiaw, urged his players to leave the pitch. This reaction came after a penalty was awarded to Maroc and a goal for the Lions was disallowed. The match fell into chaos for a period before the players eventually returned to finish the game.
Through these new provisions, FIFA aims to establish a zero-tolerance policy regarding excessive dissent, ensuring the integrity and smooth operation of global football competitions.
