Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo escalates amid coordinated response
The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to spread, with 1,203 confirmed cases and 321 deaths recorded since its emergence in mid-May, as reported in the latest health ministry bulletin.
Health officials confirm 148 recoveries, while 419 patients remain hospitalized or in isolation. The Bundibugyo strain is driving the epidemic, now affecting 34 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, with Ituri being the hardest-hit region.
Challenges hampering containment efforts
The health ministry highlights critical obstacles in the response, including community resistance to post-mortem testing, limited care capacity in Ituri, and a contact tracing rate below the 95% target. Authorities urge the public to report suspected cases, adhere to hygiene measures, and avoid handling remains to curb transmission.
International partners step up collaboration
Global health agencies and regional bodies are reinforcing joint efforts. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), led by Director General Jean Kaseya, is collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and health authorities in the DRC and France to synchronize containment strategies.
The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasized that armed conflict is severely disrupting response operations by restricting access to affected areas, displacing contacts, and undermining public trust.
Africa unites to strengthen health emergency response
In response, Africa CDC, in partnership with the WHO Regional Office for Africa and the Ugandan government, has launched a Joint Continental Incident Management Support Team (IMST). Headquartered at Makerere University in Uganda, this initiative aims to bolster coordination, technical assistance, and cross-border cooperation for the DRC, Uganda, and neighboring nations at risk.
This move underscores Africa’s commitment to enhancing preparedness and response capabilities through unified, state-led action during health emergencies.
