The South’s Unlocking: Dja River Bridge Construction Hits Milestone
As of late June 2026, the construction site of the Dja River bridge is buzzing with unprecedented activity. The project’s most critical phase—completion of the structural supports—is nearly finalized, marking a decisive leap toward unblocking vital regional corridors.
Structural breakthroughs accelerate regional connectivity
Field teams from China Harbour Engineering Company Cameroon have pushed forward with relentless efficiency, finalizing all 20 foundation piles ahead of schedule. Currently, crews are actively engaged in constructing the access roads on both sides of the river, particularly at Bissombo, where rebar work for the PK 0+669 culvert and material stabilization at PK 0+818 are in full swing.
Geotechnical assessments continue in parallel, while detailed execution studies have reached 60% completion. These coordinated efforts lay the groundwork for the bridge’s superstructure, ensuring structural integrity once deck installation begins.
Transforming regional mobility with a 90-meter lifeline
The upcoming bridge will span 90 meters, connecting key districts in the South Region—specifically linking Assok to Ngombo across the Dja and Lobo departments. Beyond the river crossing, the project includes 3 kilometers of paved access routes, fundamentally reshaping trade and transport networks in the area.
The total investment of 10.5 billion FCFA will not only deliver the main structure but also incorporate a range of complementary works:
- A dual-lane carriageway with a 7-meter width, flanked by 1.5-meter shoulders using double-layer surface dressing;
- Two 2.0 x 1.5-meter culverts and two 2.0 x 2.0-meter culverts for improved drainage;
- Reinforced embankments along both riverbanks to stabilize access points and prevent erosion.
Once operational, this infrastructure will slash travel times between southern towns, reduce transport costs for farmers and traders, and strengthen Cameroon’s integration into subregional trade routes.
Key milestones achieved
Progress as of June 2026:
- 100% completion of all 20 bridge foundation piles;
- 60% completion of detailed execution studies;
- Active reinforcement and earthworks on both access roads;
- On-site material crushing and stabilization underway.
