Burundi stands firm on western Sahara sovereignty for Morocco

In a renewed display of diplomatic solidarity, Burundi has once again voiced its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including the entirety of the Western Sahara, during high-level talks in Rabat.

The commitment was reaffirmed on Friday, June 19, 2026, when Edouard Bizimana, Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Integration, and Development Cooperation, met with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. The encounter, part of an official working visit to the Kingdom, concluded with a joint communiqué underscoring Bujumbura’s steadfast backing for Rabat’s position.

Morocco’s autonomy plan gains fresh African endorsement

During the discussions, Burundi not only reiterated its backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara but also endorsed the country’s autonomy initiative as the most viable path to resolving the decades-long regional dispute. The plan, presented as the only credible and realistic solution, was warmly received by Bujumbura, which called it a foundation for a fair, enduring, and mutually acceptable political settlement.

In addition, Burundi praised the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, viewing it as a significant step toward legitimizing Morocco’s autonomy proposal under full national sovereignty. This endorsement comes as Rabat continues its global diplomatic outreach to consolidate international backing for its initiative.

Strengthening African unity on Western Sahara

The Burundian stance aligns with a growing trend of African support for Morocco’s position, reinforcing the country’s diplomatic positioning on the world stage. This renewed alignment highlights the importance of regional cooperation in addressing geopolitical challenges and underscores the centrality of the Western Sahara issue in broader African diplomacy.
