Breaking tensions between Central African Republic and Cameroon ease after border incident

Tensions along the Central African Republic-Cameroon border have eased following a high-stakes diplomatic intervention. The incident, which erupted after two Cameroonian gendarmes armed with Kalashnikovs were filmed patrolling the village of Gasol in southern Central African territory, has been resolved through urgent dialogue.

The gendarmes, whose movements were captured on mobile phones by local residents, were accused of extortion. A Central African Republic military detachment deployed in the area intervened swiftly, halting their advance and disarming them. The incident unfolded within kilometers of the official border crossing at Beloko, raising immediate sovereignty concerns.

Following their disarmament, the Cameroonian officers were escorted to the Beloko police station, where local authorities documented the case. The weapons were temporarily confiscated before being handed back to Cameroonian authorities as a gesture of goodwill.

High-level crisis resolution

A joint emergency meeting between senior officials from both nations took place the following day. Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and mutual respect for territorial integrity. The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen border security and prevent similar incidents in the future.

A joint monitoring committee was established to oversee the resolution process and ensure transparency. This committee will conduct regular patrols and coordinate with local communities to address cross-border challenges promptly.

Longstanding border disputes

Border tensions between Central African Republic and Cameroon have simmered for decades. While Yaoundé denies any claims of illegal occupation, residents in border villages frequently report disputes over land use and security operations. This incident has reignited discussions on clarifying border demarcations and reinforcing mutual trust.
