Algeria’s Prime Minister visits Niamey to boost energy and diplomatic ties with Niger

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb of Algeria arrived in Niamey on Wednesday for an official visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The visit, authorized by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores a shared commitment to strengthening partnerships across key sectors.

The Algerian delegation includes the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, alongside the Director-General of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation and Development. The agenda focuses on assessing current bilateral relations and exploring avenues to expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Central to the discussions is the acceleration of development projects and joint initiatives between Algiers and Niamey. One of the most anticipated highlights of the visit is the inauguration of a 40-megawatt power plant in the Gorou Banda district of Niamey. Funded as a grant by Algeria, this project aligns with efforts to bolster Niger’s energy infrastructure and enhance electricity supply in critical areas of the capital.

The new facility is expected to significantly boost Niger’s power generation capacity while improving energy accessibility for local communities. It also reflects Algeria’s dedication to fostering regional stability and development in the Sahel-Sahara zone.

In addition to technical and economic exchanges, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Niger’s President to discuss future cooperation frameworks and address regional and international issues. This visit follows a period of intensified political and economic engagement between Algeria and Niger, as both nations strive to reinforce their strategic alliance for the benefit of their populations.
