The announcement came during a plenary session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where Secretary-General António Guterres conducted the random selection process. This practice, long established within the organization, ensures fairness in determining the seating order for member states.
«The Secretary-General has just announced the country that will occupy the first seat in the General Assembly Hall for the upcoming session. That country is Morocco», confirmed the UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing, welcoming the outcome.
The same session also saw the election of Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, as President of the 81st General Assembly. Additionally, member states elected vice-presidential representatives, including the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Gabon.
The United Nations General Assembly serves as the world’s largest multilateral forum, comprising all 193 member states. Each nation holds equal voting rights and plays a pivotal role in key decisions, including approving the UN budget, electing non-permanent Security Council members, and nominating the Secretary-General.
