Algeria and Chad launch 40 mw power plant to boost energy cooperation
A new 40-megawatt power plant gifted by Algeria to Chad marks a major step forward in bilateral relations between Algiers and N’Djamena.
On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside Chad’s Prime Minister and head of government Allamaye Halina, led the groundbreaking ceremony for this solidarity power plant. The facility, with a generation capacity of 40 megawatts, is a symbol of growing cooperation between the two nations.
Sonelgaz International to build the facility
The project represents a fresh milestone in ties between Algiers and N’Djamena and follows high-level directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The ceremony began with a detailed technical presentation covering engineering aspects, implementation stages, and operational plans, underlining the infrastructure’s role in enhancing energy cooperation.
Managed by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, construction has been assigned to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, the plant is designed to meet rising electricity demand and secure supply for N’Djamena and its surrounding areas. Acting as President Tebboune’s representative, Prime Minister Ghrieb stressed the strategic importance of the project, calling it one of the first tangible outcomes of commitments made by the two countries’ leaders.
Forging a robust strategic partnership
In his speech, Ghrieb highlighted President Tebboune’s focus on strengthening cooperation and solidarity with fellow African nations, as well as his personal dedication to supporting Chad’s development efforts, especially in vital sectors that improve citizens’ living conditions. He stated that the project “reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of our two brotherly countries” and moves Algeria-Chad relations “toward a solid strategic partnership rooted in effective solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.”
“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains committed to reinforcing fraternal bonds between our peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation,” he said, adding that this momentum serves the shared goal of building “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” Ghrieb noted the plant is among the first concrete results of the new dynamic launched during the Chadian president’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. “The important talks held with his brother, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, led to ambitious agreements and cooperation programs in several strategic sectors,” he remarked.
Cooperation as a driver of regional stability
The prime minister also emphasized the pan-African dimension of the initiative. “This project reflects Algeria’s deep belief that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements that directly benefit citizens,” he declared. According to him, “the Africa we believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and partnerships that create wealth for African peoples.”
He explained that this vision fits into a broader continental integration approach. Ghrieb recalled that “Algeria and Chad pay special attention to major structuring projects. The Trans-Saharan highway, fiber-optic interconnection, and enhanced air transport and logistics will help open up our interior regions and offer new prospects for trade and investment.”
African solutions for African challenges
Turning to regional matters, Ghrieb reaffirmed the alignment of views between Algiers and N’Djamena. “We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental issues,” he assured. He added, “This approach reflects our shared belief in the unity of destiny of our peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems, respecting state sovereignty.”
Ghrieb reiterated Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad’s development. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s constant commitment to supporting the Republic of Chad and strengthening bilateral partnership for the development, stability, and prosperity of our two countries,” he concluded.
