WHO’s support boosts health NGOs in Mali amid humanitarian crisis
Since 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) has played a pivotal role in coordinating health interventions among NGOs in Mali. The country is currently grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, with 6.4 million people—nearly 28% of Mali’s population—requiring urgent assistance. Shockingly, the humanitarian response plan is only 8.5% funded, with a mere 6% allocated to the health sector, severely limiting humanitarian efforts to address critical needs.
The second reserve allocation from the Humanitarian Fund for Rapid Response Activities (FHRAOC) for Mali targets populations displaced by armed violence and insecurity, particularly in Gao, Mopti, and Ségou regions. Health assistance has been prioritized for funding through this mechanism, following WHO’s advocacy based on concrete data highlighting the vulnerability of these populations in accessing essential healthcare services.
