US embassy in Rabat marks 250 years of American independence with Morocco partnership celebration

The United States embassy in Rabat held its annual Fourth of July reception on Tuesday, this year marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. For the first time, the event took place at the historic Chellah site.

The gathering brought together senior Moroccan officials, diplomats, and partners from both the public and private sectors. It highlighted nearly 250 years of friendship and cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.

Morocco holds a unique place in American history: it was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States, helping forge one of America’s oldest diplomatic relationships.

The celebration underscored the strength of the bilateral partnership across diplomacy, security, trade, and investment. It also showcased growing collaboration in innovation, infrastructure, and economic development.

The embassy emphasized the enduring American presence in Morocco, from the Tangier American Legation—the oldest U.S. diplomatic property in the world—to the recent inauguration of the new U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca, reflecting a shared commitment to forward-looking cooperation.

Speaking at the event, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Richard Duke Buchan III described the 250th anniversary as a moment to celebrate “a partnership rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and resolutely looking toward the next 250 years.”

“This partnership testifies to our commitment to strengthening economic and human ties between our peoples, notably through efforts that support His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of making the Moroccan Sahara a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunities,” the ambassador added.

The celebration also comes as Morocco participates in the World Cup hosted by the United States, offering another powerful example of the human bonds that continue to reinforce relations between the two nations.

The evening concluded with a fireworks and drone display, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the United States and Morocco and a shared vision for the future.
