Tchad secures key deals at Baku urban forum for sustainable cities
The Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Housing presented the outcomes of Chad’s mission to Baku, Azerbaijan, during the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) on May 28, 2026. This debriefing session, held at the ministerial office, brought together key participants who contributed to the delegation’s efforts.
The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, senior officials from the National Housing and Urban Development Corporation (SOPROFIM), and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions at the forum centered on critical urban challenges, including affordable housing, sustainable city growth, and climate-resilient urban infrastructure.
The minister emphasized that Chad’s participation enhanced the country’s profile on global urban issues while fostering exchanges on African urban development strategies. A dedicated pavilion showcased Chad’s national initiatives in urban planning and housing, highlighting progress and innovation in the sector.
Among the most significant outcomes is the upcoming official visit by the UN-Habitat Executive Director to Chad from September 9 to 11, 2026. This visit will provide an opportunity to assess the country’s urban realities and review several projects proposed by national authorities.
The minister also announced Chad’s inclusion among the top ten countries eligible for the UN Green Climate Fund, thanks to a proposal supported by Kenya. This eligibility grants access to substantial financing for urban resilience projects, particularly in flood mitigation and climate adaptation.
During the forum, Chad engaged in discussions with Kenya and Morocco to explore new partnerships in urbanization, social housing, and the redevelopment of informal settlements. Future cooperation missions and knowledge-sharing initiatives are planned to strengthen these collaborations.
According to the minister, this mission marks a turning point for Chad, offering tangible prospects to convert these opportunities into long-term, impactful projects for local communities.
By actively participating in WUF13, Chad reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban development, in line with the vision of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
