Sonko warns new prime minister amid political tensions in Senegal
Senegal’s political landscape remains tense as Opposition leader Ousmane Sonko issues a sharp rebuke to the newly appointed Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo. Speaking to the press, Sonko made it clear that the former technocrat’s recent statements had crossed a line, urging him to restrict his public comments to technical matters rather than political posturing.
Sonko’s stern advice to the Prime Minister
Addressing journalists in Dakar, Sonko did not mince his words. He firmly advised the Prime Minister to confine himself to the role he was appointed for. “He calls himself a technocrat, so he should stick to technocracy,” Sonko declared, emphasizing the need for Al Aminou Lo to avoid overstepping his mandate.
Unveiling hidden tensions between Pastef and the presidency
Sonko went further, alleging that the new Prime Minister played a behind-the-scenes role in exacerbating the growing rift between the ruling Pastef party and the Senegalese presidency. “We are well aware of his involvement in the disputes between Pastef and the president,” he stated, hinting at undisclosed details he has chosen to withhold. “Let him stay calm,” Sonko warned, his tone leaving no room for ambiguity.
The Opposition leader also took issue with Al Aminou Lo’s remarks during the announcement of the new government lineup. “He was giving lessons when the government was announced. Perhaps he should start by practicing what he preaches,” Sonko remarked, underscoring his disapproval of the Prime Minister’s public stance.
Sonko hints at undisclosed information
In a final jab, Sonko alluded to the fact that he possesses critical information about the political dynamics at play—information he has yet to disclose. “We know everything. We have chosen to keep certain facts quiet, but no one should push us too far,” he asserted, signaling a potential escalation in the standoff.
