A high-level delegation from Sonelgaz, Algeria’s national energy corporation, has arrived in N’Djamena to launch preparatory activities for a new 40 MW thermal power plant project in Chad. The initiative aligns with Algeria’s strategic vision to strengthen South-South cooperation, particularly with Chad, following the state visit by Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria in April 2026.

The delegation, led by Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International, was received by senior officials from Tchad-Elec, Chad’s national electricity utility. The meeting took place in the presence of the Algerian Ambassador to Chad and key representatives from Chad’s Ministry of Energy. The delegation also held high-level discussions with Chad’s Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning and International Cooperation, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, and the Minister of Water and Energy, Passalé Kanabé Marcelin.

The high-profile engagements underscore the strategic significance of the power plant project, which is expected to enhance economic and energy ties between Algeria and Chad. During their visit, Sonelgaz officials conducted site assessments to evaluate existing infrastructure, assess grid connectivity, and verify compliance with technical and regulatory standards. These steps are critical to ensuring the project meets international quality and efficiency benchmarks.

Project roadmap and next steps

The delegation finalized key preparatory measures, including:

  • Establishing a shared roadmap for project execution
  • Forming bilateral working teams to enhance coordination
  • Conducting joint technical inspections of the proposed site

Following these assessments, Sonelgaz will proceed with detailed technical planning, including feasibility studies and environmental impact reviews, before commencing construction. The project is expected to play a pivotal role in Chad’s energy transition, addressing growing electricity demand while fostering sustainable development.

Strengthening Africa’s energy landscape

The initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to supporting African partners through technology transfer, capacity building, and practical solutions tailored to the continent’s energy needs. By leveraging Sonelgaz’s expertise in power generation and distribution, the project aims to deliver reliable, high-quality electricity to Chadian households and industries, contributing to regional energy security and economic integration.

The partnership between Algeria and Chad exemplifies the potential of African-led energy projects to drive inclusive growth and resilience across the continent.
