Somalia faces severe famine threat as drought devastates livelihoods
The Horn of Africa is facing a dire emergency as Somalia teeters on the brink of a catastrophic food crisis. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has raised alarms over a worsening humanitarian disaster, with 6.5 million people already experiencing severe food insecurity due to relentless drought conditions that have obliterated essential livelihoods.
collapse of pastoralism fuels humanitarian crisis
The backbone of Somalia’s economy, pastoralism, is crumbling under the weight of two consecutive failed rainy seasons. With over 60% of the population dependent on livestock for income and sustenance, the collapse of this sector has triggered cascading effects. Massive livestock losses have stripped families of their primary food sources and economic lifelines, forcing thousands to abandon their homes in search of safety.
voices from the ground reveal the human toll
In Dhusamareb, a 61-year-old herder saw 90% of his goats and two-thirds of his camels perish within a year. « I fear our people will suffer the same fate as my animals, » he shared. Meanwhile, in the Nugal region, a 19-year-old mother fled after her entire herd died, desperate to protect her children from starvation.
mass displacement and strained humanitarian aid
Over 500,000 people have been displaced in 2025 alone, driven from their homes by both conflict and drought, particularly in the Al-Miskat hills of Bari region in Puntland. As humanitarian funding dwindles, aid organizations are being forced to scale back critical programs, including food distribution, water access, and healthcare, just as needs skyrocket.
ICRC’s emergency response efforts
Since November 2025, the ICRC has provided lifesaving support to over 5,000 displaced families. Efforts include rehabilitating boreholes in Bari and Sanaag, supplying equipment to restore water wells, and treating severely malnourished children at the stabilization center in Kismayo. The organization also supports 11 clinics run by the Somali Red Crescent Society.
a red alert for millions at risk
« Without immediate rainfall and a significant boost in humanitarian aid, millions could face an even deeper food emergency, » warns the ICRC. Somalia stands at a critical juncture—every passing day without action escalates the risk of a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe.
