Senegal’s Pastef-Les Patriotes refuse cabinet roles under new government

Just days after Ousmane Sonko was removed from the Prime Minister’s office and a new government took shape in Senegal, tensions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified. What began as exploratory talks about integrating members of Pastef-Les Patriotes into the executive branch ended in deadlock. In an official statement released June 1st by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on Facebook, Pastef firmly declared it would not place any officials in the incoming cabinet.

Negotiations had dragged on for days, with party leaders and the Head of State attempting to bridge divides over government composition. Pastef emphasized it acted “in a spirit of responsibility” and in line with internal directives. A pivotal meeting between Faye and Sonko on the morning of June 1st revealed convergences, yet fundamental disagreements persisted regarding the majority’s role within the executive structure.

Deepening rifts over governance

After consulting its COMEX, Pastef submitted revised proposals to the President, but these were ultimately rejected. Faced with a stalemate, the party opted to withdraw entirely from government formation. “Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government and will not be represented by any minister,” the statement confirmed.

The move carries significant implications for Senegal’s political balance, arriving at a time when citizens demand solutions to pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in dialogue, Pastef extended well wishes to the new administration, signaling its intention to continue influencing policy from the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as Speaker. The coming days will reveal the full impact of this latest political development at the helm of the Senegalese state.
