Senegalese minister slams sonko’s touba money laundering claims
Touba’s spiritual significance has once again taken center stage in Senegal’s political discourse following recent remarks by opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Minister of Land and Air Transport, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, has forcefully rejected Sonko’s allegations that “stolen funds” were funneled into the holy city, calling the accusations a blatant disrespect to Touba’s residents and religious heritage.
In a strongly worded statement, Ndiaye emphasized that equating Touba with money laundering operations is not just inaccurate but an affront to the city’s identity. “To associate Touba with illicit financial activities is a profound insult to its people, its sacred status, and the core values of Mouridism,” he declared. The minister stressed that such claims reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of Touba’s spiritual mission and the principles upheld by its inhabitants.
touba’s legacy under scrutiny: a defense of faith and integrity
Ndiaye went further to dismantle Sonko’s assertions, highlighting Touba’s historical role as a beacon of piety and moral discipline under the guidance of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. “The people of Touba are renowned for their unwavering commitment to dignity, hard work, and integrity—values deeply rooted in Serigne Touba’s teachings,” he noted. He dismissed the idea that its residents could be swayed by illicit wealth, calling such an assumption a gross misjudgment.
The minister also pointed to the absence of key religious and local leaders during Sonko’s visit as a clear signal of disapproval toward his statements. Beyond the controversy, Ndiaye took the opportunity to commend President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for his unwavering support of Touba’s development. “The President recognizes the sacredness of Touba and its people, and he is actively working to address their needs,” he stated. He also praised Prime Minister Mouhamadou Al Amine Lo for his dedication to resolving longstanding administrative issues inherited from previous governments.
a call for national unity over political divisions
While acknowledging the ongoing political tensions, Ndiaye urged leaders to prioritize the nation’s collective progress over divisive rhetoric. He portrayed President Faye as a leader of unshakable integrity, “a man wholly devoted to Senegal’s advancement, undeterred by criticism or attempts to undermine his leadership.” In closing, he reaffirmed his confidence in the President’s vision, emphasizing that his sole focus remains on fulfilling the aspirations of the Senegalese people and steering the country toward sustainable growth.
