Sénégal union leaders unveil ‘Dakar call’ for independent labor movement

Trade union leaders and social advocates in Sénégal converged at the CNTLS headquarters in Dakar on July 23, 2026, to launch the « Appel de Dakar » (Dakar Call), a landmark initiative reshaping the nation’s labor landscape. Amid rising job insecurity and strained social dialogue, the movement seeks to rebuild a unified, independent trade union front that prioritizes ethical integrity, professional competence, and grassroots solidarity across all sectors—from public service to the informal economy.

The declaration explicitly rejects political, administrative, or partisan interference in labor actions, emphasizing the need for transparent negotiations between unions, employers, and the state. Signatories stress that sustainable social peace cannot be enforced through coercion but must be built on mutual respect and adherence to signed agreements.

The « Appel de Dakar » also calls for a new wave of union leadership, urging young workers, women, and civic groups to take an active role in redefining the labor movement.
