Senegal: PASTEF launches internal leadership election amid calls for reform

The High Authority for Party Regulation (HARP) of PASTEF-Les Patriotes officially commenced the process for electing the party president on May 14, 2026. Following HARP’s Decision No. 001/2026/HARP, the window for submitting candidacies began on May 15 and will close at noon on May 20, 2026.

Addressing President Diomaye Faye’s call for party reform

This recent decision ensures no exclusive path for the incumbent leader, Ousmane Sonko. Instead, it formally opens the competition to all factions within PASTEF, allowing the current Prime Minister to seek a renewed mandate but without automatic re-election to the party’s top position.

This formalization of internal competition directly reflects earlier public statements by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who had previously critiqued the party for being excessively «personified.» By establishing an open and regulated electoral process, HARP directly addresses this concern, simultaneously raising crucial questions about PASTEF’s leadership during this pivotal period.

A concise five-day window for candidacies

HARP has set a tight schedule; aspiring candidates have only five working days to prepare and submit their applications. These submissions must follow a standardized declaration form, a template of which is appended to the decision. HARP’s deliberation was formally adopted during a special session held on May 14, 2026.
