Senegal’s newly formed government is already drawing criticism, particularly regarding the Justice portfolio. Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has voiced strong reservations about Me Moussa Sarr’s appointment as Attorney General, suggesting this decision could reignite legal disputes with which his party has been entangled.
Sonko argues that the Justice Minister’s involvement in past judicial cases raises serious concerns. « The lineup for the Justice Ministry does not inspire confidence in Pastef, » he stated, « given this individual’s history with sensitive legal matters that have strained relations between our party and certain courts. »
While Sonko has reserved final judgment pending the minister’s actions, his skepticism remains palpable. « We harbor doubts, but we will assess the situation, » he noted, hinting at potential parliamentary oversight of the Justice portfolio.
Prime Minister Al Amine Lô under fire
Beyond the Justice Minister controversy, Sonko has also criticized Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. The Pastef leader accused the Prime Minister of straying from his technocratic mandate, suggesting Lô’s actions reflect political maneuvering rather than administrative efficiency.
« I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat, » Sonko remarked. « His role is not to engage in politics. Having been appointed for his technical expertise, he should stick to that. »
Sonko went further, warning that he is well-informed about Lô’s activities, stating, « I know more than you might think about what he’s doing. Out of politeness, I’ve been restrained until now. He shouldn’t push his luck. »
Pastef defection concerns
Sonko’s criticism extended to party members who joined the government, including Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. He accused them of accepting ministerial positions without prior consultation with party leadership.
« Those who have taken seats in the government are acting on their own behalf, » Sonko declared. « Their cases will be addressed in due course. »
These remarks underscore the early political friction surrounding the new administration. However, it is the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Justice Minister that has sparked the most apprehension from Sonko, who insists on evaluating the minister’s actions before drawing conclusions.
