World Cup 2026: Senegal won’t sponsor fan travel to the United States

Dakar — The Senegalese government has made it clear: supporting the Lions of Teranga at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States will be a self-funded mission for the country’s football fans.

The announcement was delivered by Khady Diène Gaye, the Minister of Sports, who confirmed that no official travel arrangements would be made for supporters traveling to the tournament.

The decision follows months of speculation about whether the government would assist supporters in attending the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Logistical challenges block fan support

Speaking to Sud FM on Sunday, Minister Gaye outlined the reasons behind the government’s stance. She pointed to visa restrictions as a major hurdle, noting that three representatives from the national fan committee were denied entry visas to the tournament host nations.

« Every country operates with its own sovereignty, » Gaye explained. « For this edition, we simply cannot take responsibility for organizing the travel of supporters. »

The minister added, « We will not be arranging flights or accommodations for fans departing from Dakar to the United States. »

This decision leaves Senegalese supporters with two main options: fund their own journey or stay home. Many fans living abroad or those with financial means may still make the trip, but the absence of state involvement means the traditional mass mobilization seen in past tournaments will not materialize.

What this means for Senegal’s World Cup campaign

The Lions of Teranga will face the challenges of the 2026 FIFA World Cup without the unified fanfare that often boosts morale on the global stage. While the team’s performance remains the priority, the lack of organized supporter travel may impact the atmosphere in stadiums and the psychological edge for the players.

The government’s decision underscores a shift in policy, emphasizing fiscal responsibility and aligning with the realities of international travel logistics. Fans will now need to take the initiative, turning to crowdfunding, travel packages, or personal savings to be part of the historic event.

As the world’s biggest football spectacle approaches, Senegalese supporters are left to navigate the path to North America independently, their passion for the Lions serving as the driving force behind their journey.
