Russia’s embassy in N’Djamena marked Russia Day by highlighting strengthened bilateral ties, with cooperation spanning education, security, and diplomatic alignment on global reforms.
N’Djamena, Chad — The Embassy of the Russian Federation in N’Djamena celebrated Russia Day, underscoring the steady progress in bilateral relations with Chad across multiple sectors.
Addressing attendees, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Sokolenko emphasized that Russo-Chadian relations continue to evolve within a framework of mutual trust and equal partnership, benefiting the citizens of both nations. He highlighted the alignment between Moscow’s and N’Djamena’s visions for regional stability and global governance reforms.
Diplomatic milestones and future engagements
The Russian leadership has extended an invitation to Chadian Head of State Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to attend the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow this October. This follows a productive January 2024 state visit by the Chadian leader to Russia, marking the first high-level bilateral meeting in years. The summit is expected to provide an opportunity for further discussions on deepening cooperation.
Diplomatic exchanges have intensified since Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made his first official visit to Chad in 60 years in June 2024. During a September 2025 meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Lavrov and Chadian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties, with plans for continued high-level consultations.
Shared global objectives
Russia and Chad have reinforced their collaboration in international forums, advocating for African representation in key global institutions. Both nations welcomed UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ recent call for sweeping reforms to the international system, particularly his assertion that Africa’s potential is hindered by an unfair global order that must be rectified to provide the continent with greater voice, resources, and representation.
Security cooperation in the Sahel
Moscow has reaffirmed its support for Chad’s leadership in regional conflict resolution and peacekeeping efforts. Earlier this year, six Chadian police officers began training in Russia as part of a UN peacekeeping initiative. The two countries are also pushing for expanded security mechanisms in Central Africa and the Sahel, prioritizing regional interests.
Economic and educational partnerships
Russia has voiced strong support for Chad’s push within the African Union to diversify regional payment systems and explore alternatives to the CFA franc, aligning with broader efforts to enhance economic sovereignty.
The cornerstone of Russo-Chadian cooperation remains education, with Russia offering 360 scholarships annually to Chadian students. Under the ‘Professionalization’ initiative, Moscow is expanding vocational training programs for international students, fostering skill development and economic resilience. Discussions are underway to reform the recruitment process for Chadian students in Russia to maximize benefits for Chad.
The ongoing dialogue between Russian and Chadian ministries reflects a commitment to equitable cooperation that serves the long-term interests of both nations. With strong foundations in diplomacy, security, and education, Russia and Chad are poised to further strengthen their partnership.
Russia Day commemorates the beginning of Russia’s democratic transition in 1990, a pivotal moment in the nation’s modern history.
The event in N’Djamena was attended by senior Chadian diplomats, including the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Chadians Abroad, alongside representatives from various international missions and local authorities.
