Power cuts in Niamey, Dosso and Tillabéri: NIGELEC activates emergency measures
Niamey, 8 june 2026 – The Société nigérienne d’électricité (NIGELEC) announced on Monday that power supply disruptions affecting Dosso, Niamey, and Tillabéri stem from a technical failure on the Zone Fleuve electrical system.
The company stated that its teams detected the fault at around 1:50 a.m. and immediately mobilised technical crews to progressively restore service as quickly as possible.

While waiting for a full return to normal, NIGELEC said it has activated local generation units to reduce the impact of the cuts on consumers. The utility apologised to customers for the inconvenience and assured them that repair operations are ongoing.
A cautious crisis communication
Facing an urgent situation, NIGELEC’s management is trying to reassure caught-off-guard customers while remaining cautious. Although the company confirms that the fault centred on the critical Zone Fleuve network, it has not yet disclosed the exact nature or technical origin of this major failure.
Behind the scenes, engineers have already launched a race against time to diagnose the problem. Aware of the impact on daily life and the economy, the company urges users to be patient while technical teams secure and fully restore the main system.
A strategic geographic axis paralysed
The incident is far from minor as it strikes the economic and administrative heart of the country, including the capital Niamey and the key regions of Dosso and Tillabéri. To avoid a total blackout and keep vital infrastructure (hospitals, businesses, government offices) running, NIGELEC had to urgently activate its local production units.
This switch to backup generators, though insufficient to cover normal demand, serves as a temporary shield to mitigate major inconveniences until the national grid is reconnected.
