Patrice talon elected senate president in Benin

The first-ever legislative members of Benin’s newly established Senate convened in Porto-Novo, the nation’s capital, to vote for their leadership on August 6. In a decisive session at the Governors’ Palace, former President Patrice Talon secured the Senate presidency with an overwhelming tally: 24 votes in favor, zero against, and a single abstention.

At 68 years old, Talon brings extensive political experience to the role, having led Benin from 2016 to 2026. His election marks the beginning of a five-year term (2026–2031) for the new upper chamber of Benin’s bicameral Parliament, following the constitutional reform enacted on December 17, 2025.

The newly formed Senate includes Louis Vlavonou, a former National Assembly president, as Vice-President. Alassane Seidou, ex-Interior Minister, has been appointed as Rapporteur, while Adidjatou Mathys takes on the role of Deputy Rapporteur. These leadership selections reflect a blend of legislative and executive expertise aimed at strengthening institutional stability.

The Senate’s inauguration occurred on July 30 in Porto-Novo, setting the stage for the adoption of its internal regulations. As Benin transitions from a unicameral to a bicameral system, the Senate’s core responsibilities include safeguarding national unity, reinforcing state authority, and promoting democratic governance. The institution is also tasked with maintaining political stability, fostering peace, and upholding the principles of political truce within the country.
