Paris saint-germain on the cusp of ligue 1 glory this wednesday
- Paris Saint-Germain is set to play its postponed 29th Ligue 1 match against second-placed RC Lens on Wednesday, May 13th.
- This crucial fixture offers the capital club the chance to secure its fifth consecutive French championship title.
Paris Saint-Germain is currently navigating a remarkable season, having reached the Champions League final for the second year running. Now, the Parisian giants are poised to claim their first piece of silverware this Wednesday, May 13th. Holding a significant lead in the league with 73 points, PSG will travel to face Lens, who sit in a strong second position with 67 points after an exceptional season. This rescheduled match for the 29th day of Ligue 1 kicks off at 9 PM.
The club is on the brink of securing its 14th Ligue 1 championship, and a fifth in a row, presenting a golden opportunity to further etch its name into history. Should they win the title against their runner-up, PSG would become only the third team this century to achieve this feat mathematically. The previous instances were Lyon against Lens in the 2001-2002 season, and remarkably, PSG itself against Monaco in 2017-2018.
A draw or victory guarantees the championship for Paris
To lift the trophy as early as this Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s squad simply needs to avoid defeat. A draw at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a venue where the northern club has suffered only two losses this season, would be enough to secure their triumph. With 74 points, PSG would be out of reach by the final matchday on Sunday, May 17th, as Lens would then have 68 points. Naturally, a victory for the Parisians would also seal the championship, extending their lead even further.
Goal difference advantage: a crucial factor
Conversely, for Lens to maintain even a glimmer of hope, they must secure a victory on their home turf against a Paris Saint-Germain side reportedly hampered by injuries, with players like Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lee Kang-In, Achraf Hakimi, and Lucas Chevalier sidelined. A win would see Pierre Sage’s team, whose coach was recently named Ligue 1’s coach of the year, move to 70 points, narrowing the gap to three points behind their opponents. This scenario would theoretically allow them to draw level on points on the 38th and final day, provided PSG also loses its derby match against Paris FC.
However, even under such circumstances, it is highly improbable that Marquinhos and his teammates would be denied another title. Their significantly superior goal difference (+44 compared to Lens’s +29) serves as the tie-breaker in case of equal points. This means that even with a defeat, Paris Saint-Germain is unlikely to relinquish the top spot, unless Lens manages to overcome the substantial 15-goal difference separating the two teams in their goal tallies.
Parisian coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the situation after his team’s 1-0 victory over Brest, stating, “We must highlight what Lens has done all season, they have been at an incredible level, it has been very difficult for us,”
adding with confidence, “but we are already champions, 99.9%.”
The footballing world now awaits to see if that percentage will reach a definitive 100% this Wednesday, or if the official confirmation will be postponed until the final weekend of competition.
