Ousmane sonko withdraws from Senegal government over lack of influence

Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Patriotic Front (PASTEF), has revealed the depth of tensions that led to his party’s decision not to join the newly formed government. During a press briefing, he exposed the irreconcilable differences between PASTEF and the presidency, particularly in negotiations over the executive’s structure and policy direction.

According to Sonko, discussions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s team revealed a fundamental shift in priorities. He claimed that the president had already made up his mind to exclude PASTEF from key decision-making processes, despite the party’s electoral mandate. Sonko emphasized a core democratic principle: « Governance must reflect the will of the majority that brought the leader to power. »

The breakdown in talks centered on critical issues, including public debt management, economic policies to boost purchasing power, contract renegotiations, and judicial reforms. Sonko made it clear that no agreement was reached on any of these fronts. He highlighted the justice system as the most contentious point, stating, « There is no consensus on accountability or legal reforms. »

Sonko had set a non-negotiable condition for participation: PASTEF must hold a majority in the 30-minister cabinet. When this demand was ignored, he concluded that the party would have no meaningful influence over governance. His statement underscored the frustration: « Without leverage, there is no purpose in joining a government where decisions are made elsewhere. »

As a result, PASTEF announced its refusal to participate in the administration led by Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, marking a decisive split between the party and the presidency.
