Political tensions in Senegal as sonko criticizes president faye’s leadership
Dakar — After his departure from the government and the formation of a new cabinet excluding members of his party, Pastef, Ousmane Sonko has broken his silence, delivering sharp remarks about President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership.
Speaking to the press, the opposition leader did not mince his words. While emphasizing that personal relations with the Head of State remain intact, he highlighted a troubling lack of dialogue. « The President refused to engage with me,» Sonko stated, adding that the Head of State continues to consult with others while excluding him from key discussions.
From allies to critics: tracing the shift in relations
Recalling the deep political ties that once united their camps, Sonko lamented the growing distance between them. In Wolof, he stressed, « Manilén bou kenn dem, na Président nek si cotém, niou nek sunu côté », meaning that despite shared origins, the President now distances himself from their collective vision.
Despite the visible tensions, Sonko insisted that the relationship has not deteriorated into direct confrontation. « We have never spoken harshly face to face, » he asserted, aiming to dispel notions of a personal feud.
Opposition’s role: addressing challenges beyond political rivalry
Sonko framed the current disagreements as part of broader governance challenges rather than a personal rift. « We are not adversaries of President Diomaye,» he declared. « The true opponents are the rising cost of living, transportation woes, and the daily struggles of Senegalese citizens. »
He warned that certain political factions may seek to exploit these divisions within the executive, calling for unity in addressing pressing national issues rather than focusing on internal disputes.
Uncertain future for pastef and the government
The remarks come at a pivotal moment, as the government undergoes restructuring and Pastef navigates its position in the political landscape. The evolving dynamics raise questions about the future of collaboration—or opposition—between Sonko’s party and the administration.
