Political tensions in Senegal pastef party disputes government formation

In a press conference held this past Tuesday, June 2, Ousmane Sonko, the leader of Pastef, delivered sharp criticism regarding the formation of Senegal‘s new government under Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo. He accused President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of attempting to bypass the party’s governing bodies during consultations, calling the process irregular and a calculated move to weaken Pastef.

Controversial consultation methods spark party tensions

The crux of Sonko‘s allegations revolves around direct outreach to former ministers, bypassing party structures. He insisted that such consultations should occur through formal party channels, not individual appointments. Sonko questioned the legitimacy of these talks, stating, « Calling members individually contradicts the principles of a structured political party like Pastef. We operate through designated leadership bodies. »

Diomaye Faye’s political weight under scrutiny

During the conference, Sonko also addressed claims made by President Faye regarding his influence within Pastef. He dismissed the assertion that Faye held greater representativeness in the party. Sonko challenged him directly, suggesting a public test of support: « If he believes he is the most representative, let him organize a rally without me. If he gathers even a hundred people, we’ll see. Starting with Ndiaganiao, his own commune, where he couldn’t win. He has no real backing within Pastef. »

Failed mediation attempts

Sonko revealed that several outgoing ministers had advised Prime Minister Lo to engage with the party’s leadership during consultations. However, he claimed these recommendations were ignored. He recounted a phone call to the president urging adherence to party protocols, only to be met with resistance. Sonko noted that despite his efforts, the president continued to bypass established channels, reaching out to individual members who ultimately refused to comply.

The tense relationship between the two leaders culminated in a mediated meeting brokered by the Prime Minister and others. Sonko recounted receiving a late-night message from President Faye on Monday, June 1, requesting a meeting at the Palace. He agreed to attend the following morning at 8 a.m., marking their first direct discussion in weeks.

The revelations shed light on the growing rifts within Pastef and the broader implications for governance in Senegal as the new administration takes shape.
