Norwegian development minister’s official visit to Dakar highlights cooperation
The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dakar recently played host to an official visit by Åsmund Aukrust, Norway’s Minister of International Development, from May 3 to 4, 2026. This two-day trip to Senegal underscored the growing importance of bilateral relations between the two nations.
The high-level meetings kicked off with discussions led by Cheikh Niang, Senegal’s Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad. Other key figures in attendance included Elhadj Abdourahmane Diouf, Senegal’s Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition, Abdourahmane Sarr, Minister of Economy, Planning, and Cooperation, and El Malick Ndiaye, President of the National Assembly.
During these discussions, both sides explored critical regional challenges, particularly the evolving security dynamics in the Sahel zone. Talks also extended to global issues and multilateral initiatives like the UN’s 80th anniversary celebrations. The visit served as a platform to reinforce shared objectives in environmental sustainability, economic growth, and democratic stability.
Norway’s delegation emphasized Senegal’s pivotal role as a stable democracy and a trusted partner in fostering regional peace and cooperation. The visit concluded with a renewed commitment to deepen collaboration across key sectors, including climate action, trade, and governance.
