N’Djamena to get 40 mw power plant with first stone laid soon

Mourad Adjal confirmed on Wednesday in Niamey that the groundbreaking ceremony for N’Djamena’s new 40-megawatt power plant will take place within days.

The project, spearheaded by Sonelgaz International, marks another milestone in the company’s continental expansion strategy, building on its recent success in Niger.

Proven track record in cross-border energy projects

Speaking at the inauguration of the 40-megawatt Algerian-Nigerien Solidarity Power Plant in Gorou Banda (Niamey)—attended by Algeria’s Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman—Adjal highlighted Sonelgaz International’s ability to deliver major energy projects beyond Algeria’s borders within strict deadlines.

The minister praised the completion of the Niamey facility, noting it demonstrates the company’s reliability in executing complex infrastructure projects under tight schedules.

Rising demand for Sonelgaz International’s expertise

Adjal revealed that Sonelgaz International is preparing additional projects across Africa, starting with the 40-megawatt plant in Chad. The groundbreaking is imminent, reflecting growing global confidence in the company’s technical and logistical capabilities.

He also pointed to increasing interest from several African nations, including Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique, eager to collaborate on energy initiatives. These projects align with Sonelgaz International’s strategy to leverage its technical expertise to accelerate deployment while maintaining high standards of quality.

Boosting South-South cooperation through energy partnerships

Sonelgaz International will serve as a catalyst for Algerian public and private enterprises, integrating them into project phases to create value chains that strengthen national expertise in African markets, Adjal explained.

He recalled the Algeria-Chad agreement signed in May, which outlined plans for the N’Djamena power plant—a commitment to deepen South-South cooperation in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision to support African development.

Transforming N’Djamena’s energy landscape

The new plant will feature a fast-tracked production infrastructure, following the proven model successfully tested in Niamey. This approach is expected to streamline execution and ensure timely delivery in Chad.

A joint team of engineers, technicians, and specialists from Sonelgaz International has already been deployed, working alongside local partners in Chad. These teams are conducting site assessments, coordinating logistics, and preparing the groundwork for the project. Additional rotations will follow to ensure smooth on-site operations as construction advances.

The logistical framework mirrors the Niger experience, with plans to mobilize equipment and install key infrastructure efficiently. Once operational, the plant will significantly boost N’Djamena’s energy capacity, stabilize the national grid, and support economic growth by enhancing power reliability for businesses and public services.
