Morocco’s tourism sector surges, targeting 26 million visitors by 2030

Morocco’s thriving tourism sector welcomed nearly 20 million visitors in 2025, generating an impressive 138 billion dirhams in revenue. The momentum continued into the first five months of 2026, confirming robust growth, as revealed during the National Moroccan Tourist Office (ONMT) board meeting held in Rabat on June 24.

The session, chaired by Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor, alongside ONMT Director General Achraf Fayda, provided a comprehensive update on the sector’s strong performance and the ongoing progress towards Morocco’s ambitious goal of attracting 26 million tourists by 2030.

According to the ONMT, international tourist arrivals saw a 7% increase by the end of May 2026. Concurrently, tourism receipts surged by 21%, while overnight stays in classified accommodation establishments grew by 9%.

Minister Ammor highlighted the effectiveness of the 2023-2026 roadmap, stating, «By focusing simultaneously on air connectivity, promotional efforts, strategic investment, service quality, and regional development, Morocco is demonstrating its capacity to scale up and compete with the world’s leading tourist destinations.»

Significant strides in air connectivity were also underscored during the board meeting. Contracted airline capacity for the summer 2026 season reached 7.74 million seats, marking a 13% year-on-year rise. This expansion was propelled by the establishment of new airline bases in key cities like Rabat, Marrakech, and Tétouan, alongside the launch of 52 fresh international routes during the first half of 2026.

Looking ahead, the ONMT has outlined several strategic priorities to underpin the 2030 objective. These include further strengthening air links, diversifying source markets with a particular focus on emerging regions such as China, India, and Latin America, expanding maritime routes and cruise tourism, and progressively integrating artificial intelligence into marketing and commercial operations.
