Moroccan authorities have launched a comprehensive response to prevent any illegal attempts to cross into the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla. This follows the emergence of anonymous online messages and social media posts calling for a coordinated mass crossing on August 15.
In a press briefing in Rabat, Rachid El Khalfi confirmed that security forces have already detained several individuals suspected of inciting these actions. The detainees are currently undergoing judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office. The Interior Ministry emphasized that such calls pose “serious risks to public safety” and constitute criminal offenses under national law. Both participants and organizers of these campaigns will face legal consequences.
Enhanced border security measures in effect
The Interior Ministry highlighted that security operations are not limited to a specific timeframe but are part of an ongoing, permanent surveillance system near the Ceuta and Melilla border crossings. The deployment is continuously adapted based on evolving risks and field conditions. Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant, avoid misleading or suspicious instructions, and prioritize their safety. They stressed that combating irregular migration is conducted strictly within the bounds of the law.
Call for Spain to accelerate minor repatriations
In a statement, the Moroccan Interior Ministry reiterated that addressing irregular migration and human trafficking requires a “shared responsibility” approach involving both countries. It called on Spanish authorities to fulfill bilateral agreements by expediting the return of unaccompanied Moroccan minors currently in Ceuta to their families. The ministry urged Madrid to overcome administrative and judicial hurdles hindering these repatriations, always prioritizing the best interests of the children.
Rabat also underscored the importance of the “immediate return” mechanism, citing its effectiveness in past border interventions. The ministry assured that Moroccan authorities will continue to enforce public order and safety with firmness and responsibility, maintaining high levels of readiness and constant coordination while fully adhering to legal provisions.
