Morocco reaffirms commitment to UN peace operations in Rabat meeting

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, welcomed the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, in Rabat on Monday. This marks Lacroix’s second official visit to the kingdom.

Discussions focused on the significant role and the substantial, exemplary contribution of Morocco to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Morocco’s contribution stems from a strategic royal vision rooted in its longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping, which dates back to 1960.

Currently ranked ninth among the top troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping, Morocco presides over the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026 and serves as coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peacekeeping issues. This reflects the international community’s trust in Morocco’s role in global peace and security.

Mr. Lacroix’s visit comes at a time when the UN Secretary-General has launched wide-ranging reform projects, including the “UN 80” initiative aimed at streamlining the UN Secretariat, as well as a comprehensive strategic review of all peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security architecture, with the goal of restoring the primacy of political solutions in conflict management.
