Morocco elected to mediterranean parliament bureau with ai role
Morocco has secured a prominent position within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) by being elected to its Bureau, while also taking on the presidency of the Artificial Intelligence Commission. This significant development underscores the growing recognition of Moroccan parliamentary diplomacy and the Kingdom’s expanding influence within this key Euro-Mediterranean institution.
The milestone was achieved during the 10th Summit of Parliament Presidents and the 19th plenary session of the PA-UfM, held over the weekend at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the country’s new administrative capital. Leading Morocco’s delegation, Vice President of the Chamber of Representatives Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, seized the opportunity to solidify the Kingdom’s role within the assembly’s governance structure.
A new chapter in parliamentary engagement
During an expanded Bureau meeting held on the sidelines of the main discussions, delegates finalized the composition of the PA-UfM’s new Bureau for the 2026–2030 term, along with the leadership of its permanent commissions. Morocco’s election to the Bureau and its appointment as chair of the Artificial Intelligence Commission reflect the trust placed in its parliamentary diplomacy and the Kingdom’s strategic positioning in the Euro-Mediterranean arena.
In his address to the plenary session, Fassi Fihri reaffirmed that the PA-UfM remains a vital platform for fostering dialogue and cooperation between parliaments across the Mediterranean. He highlighted how the assembly’s thematic focus—spanning artificial intelligence, youth participation, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflects a shared awareness of the profound transitions reshaping the region. These changes extend beyond technological innovation to encompass shifts in cultural sensitivities, influence dynamics, and decision-making mechanisms.
Strategic vision and parliamentary contributions
Fassi Fihri emphasized that under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues to advance its modernization agenda, particularly in digital transformation and technological infrastructure development. This strategic vision positions knowledge-based economy as a cornerstone for sustainable growth, enhanced competitiveness, and Morocco’s role as a reliable partner in the Mediterranean, Africa, and beyond.
The Moroccan delegation, which included Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, actively participated in meetings across various organs and commissions. Their engagement focused on critical Mediterranean priorities, including parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence, youth involvement in policymaking, and efforts to strengthen security, stability, and shared development across the region.
The concluding remarks of the session called for sustained parliamentary coordination among member states and a reinforced role for the PA-UfM as a dialogue and trust-building platform dedicated to advancing security, stability, sustainable development, and collective prosperity across the Mediterranean.
