The Kingdom of Morocco actively participated in the second Political Conference addressing the crucial nexus between peace, security, and development, held from July 11 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
This significant conference builds upon the foundations laid by the inaugural Political Conference on the peace, security, and development nexus, which convened in Tangier from October 25 to 27, 2022. That initial gathering culminated in the landmark adoption of the Tangier Declaration, a document that established a comprehensive African vision for this interconnected relationship. The Declaration emphasizes coordinated public policies, strengthened partnerships, and the implementation of tangible projects designed to foster lasting peace, robust security, and sustainable development across the African continent.
The Tangier Process has since solidified its position as the continent’s foremost platform for dialogue concerning the vital interdependence of peace, security, and development in Africa. It convenes key continental and international stakeholders committed to this domain, including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Development Bank.
The primary objective of this second conference was to meticulously evaluate the progress achieved in operationalizing the principles outlined in the Tangier Declaration. Furthermore, participants sought to identify actionable and operational strategies that can further fortify the intricate connection between peace, security, and development throughout Africa.
Discussions during the conference were structured around five distinct panels. These sessions delved into crucial topics such as the practical implementation of the Tangier Declaration through specific thematic projects, the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and youth-driven innovations, the intricate relationship between security expenditures and development outcomes, strategies for mobilizing essential financing for Nexus projects, and critical lessons learned from the African Union’s support for complex political transitions.
During the proceedings, the Moroccan delegation, led by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, underscored Morocco’s unwavering vision. This vision advocates for an integrated approach to peace, security, and development, one firmly rooted in strengthening partnerships and championing African-led solutions that genuinely address the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
