Marseille’s om summer tour 2026: a boost for ivorian tourism

The first rays of dawn greeted the Marseille-based football club as their plane touched down at Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan-Port Bouët on a mid-July Wednesday. The delegation was greeted with traditional dances, rhythmic drumbeats, and the passionate chants of local supporters. This historic arrival launched the three-day OM Summer Tour 2026, marking the renewal of a landmark partnership between Olympique de Marseille and Côte d’Ivoire’s tourism promotion agency.

Renewed partnership worth 5 million euros annually

The agreement, signed in April and extended for three years, injects approximately €5 million per year into the French club’s coffers—equivalent to 3.275 billion West African CFA francs—while positioning Côte d’Ivoire as a premier tourist destination in Europe. In exchange, Olympique de Marseille commits to showcasing the West African nation’s cultural and natural treasures to its vast European fanbase through coordinated marketing and visibility campaigns.

Led by Tourism Minister Siandou Fofana, the initiative is a strategic collaboration involving the Ministries of Culture and Sports. The shared goal: amplify Côte d’Ivoire’s appeal among European travelers by leveraging the global prestige of a historic French football institution.

Public training session and exhibition match on the agenda

The itinerary includes a public training session on Thursday at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan-Plateau, where fans will witness firsthand the intensity and teamwork of the Marseille squad. The tour reaches its climax on Friday evening with a free exhibition match against top-tier Ivorian side Yamoussoukro FC at the same venue, kicking off at 6:30 PM. This open-access event is designed to foster cultural exchange and deepen football ties between both nations.

Beyond the sporting spectacle, a high-level meeting between government officials and the OM delegation is scheduled, alongside a charitable visit to underprivileged children, reinforcing the tour’s community-focused mission.

Côte d’Ivoire’s rising star in African tourism

Côte d’Ivoire is rapidly emerging as West Africa’s leading tourist destination, driven by a national strategy under the Sublime Côte d’Ivoire brand launched in 2019. With a GDP of $85 billion in 2025—making it francophone Africa’s largest economy—the country boasts pristine Atlantic coastlines, lush national parks, and a vibrant cultural heritage. Abidjan, home to 5.6 million people, serves as the economic heartbeat and tourism hub, with the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium—a 35,000-seat landmark in the Plateau district—hosting key events including the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

The OM partnership fits into a broader diplomatic effort involving collaborations with European sports federations to enhance Côte d’Ivoire’s international visibility. France remains the top source of inbound tourists, a trend this initiative aims to sustain and expand.

Football as a bridge between cultures

The tour exemplifies how sport can transcend borders. By capitalizing on Olympique de Marseille’s popularity across the Francophone world and Côte d’Ivoire’s deep passion for European football, the government seeks to elevate the country’s profile beyond its current tourism potential. For the Marseille club, this deal represents one of its most lucrative sponsorship arrangements, complementing revenue from kit manufacturers and commercial partners, following a competitive 2025–2026 domestic season.

The delegation departs on Sunday, with the Ministry of Tourism set to evaluate media coverage and tourism bookings in the weeks ahead. If successful, the tour may become an annual fixture, further embedding Côte d’Ivoire in the global football consciousness and travel itineraries.
